After-Hours Answering Service for Contractors: AI vs Human (2026)

Nights and weekends are when burst pipes, dead furnaces and lockouts happen, and when nobody is at the desk. This guide covers your options for after-hours call answering and what they cost, using only prices published by vendors in our directory.

Your three options

  1. Voicemail plus callback. Free, but the caller may phone the next business on the list.
  2. Human answering service. Live agents take messages or dispatch. Goodcall's pricing page puts live answering services at about $1.50 to $1.90 a minute (their figure, not ours).
  3. AI receptionist on after-hours forwarding. Answers every call, takes details, and on some plans books or transfers urgent calls.

After-hours setup that works

  1. Write down what counts as an emergency for your trade (active water, gas smell, no heat with vulnerable people, sparking).
  2. Set conditional forwarding: after hours, or when unanswered after a set number of rings.
  3. Tell the AI exactly who gets emergency transfers and what to do if they don't pick up.
  4. Non-emergencies: book the first morning slot or take a detailed message.
  5. Test it at 11pm from a cell phone before your first real night.

FAQ

What is the cheapest way to answer after-hours calls?

Among prices we verified on vendor pages, entry AI plans start at Upfirst $24.95/mo, Dialzara $29/mo, and Rosie or OnCrew $49/mo, and Smith.ai has a free AI-first tier for 25 calls. Check call or minute limits against your after-hours volume.

Can an AI receptionist send real emergencies to my on-call tech?

Some can. Rosie lists warm/live transfer on Scale and above, Dialzara on Pro and above, Goodcall lists call transfers, and Lucrovox lists human transfer (unverified third-party data). Test it with a realistic emergency call before going live.

Do I have to forward all my calls?

No. Most contractors start by forwarding only after-hours or unanswered calls, then keep answering during the day. Your phone carrier controls how conditional forwarding is set up.
